The Cahoon Museum of American Art is one of the many wonderful perks of visiting and living in Cotuit, Ma. Previously the home and studio of Cape Cod natives Ralph and Martha Cahoon from 1945 until Ralph Cahoon's death in 1982, the Museum features fine art, folk art and American art from the 1800's through present day. The Cahoons themselves began their artistic careers as furniture restorers and decorators. They were commissioned by a wealthy New York heiress to create framed works of art for her gallery, after which their works were sold in prestigious galleries throughout the United States and even were purchased by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to hang in the White House. Ralph Cahoon had included mermaids as characters in his scenic paintings, but began painting them in greater detail in the 1960s.

The mermaid is also the mascot of the Kettle Ho Restaurant and Tavern, a beloved local spot with some of the best locally-caught fish around and a casual, Cape Cod-friendly vibe.
